Uluwatu Temple is located at the southern end of Jl. Raya Uluwatu in the Pecatu area of South Kuta district, approximately 25 kilometres south of Denpasar and around 18 kilometres from Kuta beach. The road winds through the dry scrub and limestone hills of the Bukit Peninsula, passing surfer villages and cliff-top villas before arriving at the temple carpark.

No guide to Uluwatu Temple is complete without serious attention to the Kecak performance held at the open-air cliff-top amphitheatre every evening at 18:00. This is, without exaggeration, one of the most extraordinary theatrical experiences in South-East Asia.

For the sunset: Arrive by 16:30 to walk the cliff promenade in full afternoon light, then be seated for the Kecak at 18:00. The sun sets into the ocean directly west of the cliff between roughly 17:45 and 18:30 depending on the time of year. The light in the final 30 minutes before sunset is extraordinary.

Monkey protocol: I cannot stress this enough. Remove your sunglasses and put them in your bag before entering the monkey zone around the forest path. A monkey snatching glasses off your face happens faster than you can react. Same for dangling earrings, exposed snacks, and phones held loosely.

Uluwatu Temple is not just a sunset photo location. It is a living sacred site carrying more than a thousand years of Balinese Hindu civilisation, a world-class performing arts tradition, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Asia. Give it the time and preparation it deserves and it will be one of your strongest memories of Bali.
